Behavior Guidance

You cannot manage another person’s behavior for them — you can hold things together for a moment, but the instant you turn away, the choice is theirs again. This module offers the alternative to control: guidance. It begins with the truth everything rests on — behavior is a choice — then moves through loving kids enough to hold them accountable, building agreements instead of imposing rules, catching kids being good, the guiding conversation (asking instead of telling), and choosing effective over efficient. It ends where it truly begins: relationship, the foundation without which none of the techniques work, and parents as allies.

Overview

Length: 5 minutesAuthor: CynDee ZandesComplexity: Standard

You cannot manage another person’s behavior for them — the moment you turn away, the choice is theirs again. This module offers the alternative to control: guidance. It moves from the core truth that behavior is a choice, through accountability, agreements, and catching kids being good, to the foundation that makes it all work — relationship.

1. Behavior Is a Choice

Length: 5 minutesAuthor: CynDee ZandesComplexity: Standard

Hidden in ‘he made me mad’ is a quiet lie: nobody makes us do anything. This foundational lesson establishes that behavior is a choice — and until a child truly understands that, nothing else about behavior guidance can take hold. It’s the seed the whole Trilogy grows from.

2. Do You Love Them Enough to Hold Them Accountable?

Length: 5 minutesAuthor: CynDee ZandesComplexity: Standard

Many adults feel love for kids; fewer do the harder work of love. This lesson asks the question that separates them: holding a child accountable is one of the most respectful things you can do, because it treats their choices as mattering. Accountability isn’t punishment — it’s belief in the child.

3. Agreements, Not Rules

Length: 5 minutesAuthor: CynDee ZandesComplexity: Standard

We break rules we didn’t believe in and keep promises we made. This lesson draws the line: a rule handed down is something to get around; an agreement you helped make is something you feel bound to keep. Get this distinction right and behavior guidance gets dramatically easier.

4. Catch Kids Being Good

Length: 5 minutesAuthor: CynDee ZandesComplexity: Standard

Most adults are wired to spot problems, so kids remember getting caught doing wrong far more than being noticed doing right. This lesson is the correction: catch kids being good and reinforce the behavior you want — assume the best of them, tell them out loud you believe in them, and intervene at the lowest level that works.

5. The Guiding Conversation

Length: 5 minutesAuthor: CynDee ZandesComplexity: Standard

‘Stop that right now’ is a reprimand; ‘Help me understand what just happened’ is a conversation. This lesson teaches the guiding conversation — the art of asking instead of telling — which is the difference between managing a moment and changing a life.

6. Effective Over Efficient

Length: 5 minutesAuthor: CynDee ZandesComplexity: Standard

The reprimand takes ten seconds; the guiding conversation takes five real minutes you don’t feel you have. This lesson is about why, so often, you should choose the slower path anyway — because efficient ends a moment, but effective builds a child who makes the better choice next time, on their own.

7. The Foundation: Relationship (and Parents as Allies)

Length: 5 minutesAuthor: CynDee ZandesComplexity: Standard

Saved for last because it actually comes first: every technique in this module rests on relationship. A child won’t be guided by an adult they don’t trust. This closing lesson grounds behavior guidance in connection — and extends it by making parents allies rather than adversaries.
