Before a child can learn, grow, or build a single relationship, one essential condition has to exist: they must feel safe. And safety is far more than preventing accidents — it’s the conditions that free children to participate, take healthy risks, and thrive. This module explores safety through three connected dimensions: physical safety, which protects us from harm; social safety, which helps us know we belong; and emotional safety, which reminds us that we matter. Then it brings all three down to the ground, into the everyday situations you’ll actually face. Safety isn’t a policy — it’s a hundred intentional choices, made by adults who notice.

Lessons

1. Three Dimensions of Safety

Length: 5 minutesAuthor: CynDee ZandesComplexity: Standard

Before a child can learn, grow, or build a single relationship, one condition has to exist first: they must feel safe. This opening lesson frames the whole module around three connected dimensions — physical safety protects us from harm, social safety helps us know we belong, and emotional safety reminds us that we matter. Together they are the foundation for everything else.

2. Physical Safety

Length: 5 minutesAuthor: CynDee ZandesComplexity: Standard

Physical safety is far bigger than earthquake drills — it’s the hundreds of small daily decisions that protect kids: the backpack moved from the walkway, the playground checked before arrival, the active supervision that sees the whole group. This lesson builds the “preoccupation with failure” mindset of high-reliability organizations (attentive, not fearful) and the habit of rehearsing calm before you ever need it.

3. Social Safety

Length: 5 minutesAuthor: CynDee ZandesComplexity: Standard

Social safety means every child and adult feels like they belong — and belonging never happens by accident. This lesson builds it through daily acts (greeting by name, inviting the kid sitting alone) and the Bully Triangle: empowering the onlookers, supporting the child who’s hurt, and coaching the child who bullies — because everyone learns, everyone grows, everyone belongs.

4. Emotional Safety

Length: 5 minutesAuthor: CynDee ZandesComplexity: Standard

The deepest dimension: children feel safe enough to share their worries, hopes, and struggles because they trust they’ll be met with understanding, not judgment. This lesson connects your relationship philosophy — time with and for, care that empowers, belief in every person — to trust, active listening, and reading a child’s “captions,” the story their behavior tells before words ever do.

5. Everyday Safety

Length: 5 minutesAuthor: CynDee ZandesComplexity: Standard

This lesson brings safety down to the ground — snacks and allergies, heat and smoke, pickup and custody, field trips, the digital world, trauma-informed care, and your role as a mandated reporter. The through-line: you don’t have to be the expert on any of it. Your job is to be aware, know your plan, and use your experts — the adult who notices, and never looks away.
