Learning Children’s Names is a Consult4Kids course built around one goal: learning every child’s name in the first days of a program. It sounds simple. In a busy after-school site with a rotating group of kids, it is anything but. This course shows youth program staff practical ways to do it.
Why names matter so much
A child’s name is one of the first signals that they belong. When an adult greets them by name, a child hears that they have been noticed. When an adult keeps saying hey you, a child hears the opposite. Learning names quickly helps with behavior too, because children respond more readily when they are addressed personally.
Techniques the course covers
The course offers practical approaches staff can use right away:
- greeting each child by name at arrival and asking for help with names you do not know
- linking each name to something specific about the child, such as an interest they mentioned
- using names often in the first week, in directions, praise and conversation
- quick name games that work for groups of different ages
- simple tools like seating charts or photo rosters for staff who see many children
The first three days
The course pays special attention to the start of a session. On day one, the goal is to learn as many names as possible through greetings and introductions. On day two, staff use names constantly and fill gaps quietly. By day three, the aim is that every child has been called by name several times. Teams that plan this together often find it changes the feel of the whole session.
When you forget a name
Everyone forgets. The course suggests honest, kind ways to handle it: admit it, ask again and use the name right away. Children are generally forgiving when an adult clearly cares enough to try.
For site coordinators
Coordinators can use the course with the whole team before a new session. When every staff member commits to learning names quickly, children experience a consistent welcome across the program. The course works well as a short team training.

A small skill with a big effect
Consult4Kids focuses on strengthening the adults and systems around children. Few skills do that as quickly as learning names. Start the course, try one technique at your next session and notice how children respond when they hear their names.
