Asking Better Questions
Asking better questions means using prompts that encourage thinking instead of simple yes-or-no responses. Open-ended questions invite youth to explain ideas, share perspectives, and explore possibilities. These questions help adults understand how youth are reasoning and where support is needed. Better questions also shift the focus from getting the right answer to understanding the process. For example, asking “How did you decide that?” promotes reflection and problem-solving. Questioning strategies can be used during activities, transitions, and debriefs. When adults model curiosity, youth learn that inquiry is valued. Over time, youth begin to ask their own questions and take greater ownership of learning. Asking better questions builds critical thinking and communication skills. It also strengthens relationships by showing genuine interest in youth thoughts and experiences.
