The habit of being proactive teaches young people that they have the power to influence their choices and actions. Rather than reacting to situations impulsively or blaming circumstances, proactive youth learn to pause, think, and choose their responses carefully.

Adults can model this habit by encouraging youth to take responsibility for their decisions. For example, when a challenge arises, instead of solving it immediately for them, ask guiding questions such as, “What could you do to improve the situation?” or “What would be a positive choice right now?”

Teaching youth to be proactive helps them develop independence and accountability. They begin to recognize that their actions affect outcomes and relationships. This awareness strengthens decision-making skills and builds confidence.

Proactive youth also become better leaders because they learn to anticipate challenges, prepare for responsibilities, and contribute positively to their environment.

Child Champions help youth understand that while we cannot control every situation, we can always choose how we respond.
