Building Trust with Youth

Trust is the foundation of effective relationships between adults and young people. It develops when youth experience consistency, fairness, and genuine care. Adults build trust by keeping promises, listening without judgment, and responding respectfully even in challenging moments. Trust also grows when youth feel that their perspectives are valued and their concerns are taken seriously. Clear boundaries and predictable expectations further strengthen trust because youth know what to expect from adults. When trust is present, youth are more likely to participate, communicate openly, and accept guidance. This connection supports both learning and behavior development. Trust does not form instantly; it is built through repeated positive interactions over time. By prioritizing relationships alongside rules and routines, staff create an environment where youth feel safe to grow, take risks, and seek support.
