Coaching Conversations

Coaching conversations focus on guiding youth toward insight and improvement rather than simply correcting behavior. These conversations involve listening carefully, asking reflective questions, and helping youth identify next steps. Instead of telling youth what to do, adults encourage them to consider their choices and the effects of those choices. Coaching builds self-awareness and responsibility by placing youth in an active role in problem-solving. It also strengthens relationships because youth feel respected rather than judged. Effective coaching conversations are calm, private, and focused on growth. They separate the behavior from the person and reinforce belief in the youth’s ability to improve. Over time, coaching helps youth develop decision-making and self-regulation skills. This approach transforms discipline into learning by using dialogue as a tool for development rather than control.
