Confidence and Competence

Confidence and competence develop together through practice and success. Competence refers to having the skills needed to complete tasks, while confidence reflects belief in one’s ability to do so. Adults support both by providing appropriate challenges and guidance. When youth experience achievable success, their confidence grows, encouraging them to take on new tasks. Feedback that highlights effort and improvement reinforces this process. Confidence without competence can lead to frustration, while competence without confidence may limit participation. Balanced support ensures that youth feel capable and willing to try. Over time, youth build a stronger sense of self-efficacy and persistence. This relationship between confidence and competence prepares young people to face challenges with determination. By designing experiences that promote skill development, programs help youth grow into capable and self-assured individuals.
