Cultural Humility in Practice
Cultural humility is an ongoing commitment to learning about and respecting the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and identities of others. In youth programs, this means recognizing that culture influences behavior, communication, and expectations. Practicing cultural humility involves listening more than assuming, asking questions instead of relying on stereotypes, and reflecting on one’s own beliefs and biases. It also requires adapting practices to be inclusive and accessible for all participants. Cultural humility is not about mastering facts about different cultures but about remaining open to learning from youth and families. This approach strengthens relationships by validating individual experiences and perspectives. When adults demonstrate curiosity and respect, youth feel seen and valued. Cultural humility supports equity by ensuring that programs respond to real needs rather than imposing one standard on everyone. It builds trust and fosters a sense of belonging within diverse communities.
