Initiative is the willingness to take action without being told exactly what to do. When young people develop initiative, they begin to look for ways to contribute, solve problems, and explore opportunities independently.

Adults can encourage initiative by giving youth opportunities to make suggestions and take responsibility for small tasks. When a young person offers an idea or volunteers to help, recognizing that effort reinforces the behavior.

Programs can also encourage initiative by asking youth open-ended questions such as, “What do you think we should try next?” or “How might we improve this activity?”

When youth feel their ideas are valued, they become more willing to participate actively and take leadership roles.

Child Champions understand that initiative builds confidence, creativity, and independence. When young people learn to take positive action on their own, they begin developing the leadership skills that will support them throughout life.
