Listening with Understanding and Empathy
Listening with understanding and empathy means giving full attention to another person and seeking to understand their feelings and perspective. In youth programs, this skill supports relationship-building and conflict resolution. Adults model empathetic listening by making eye contact, paraphrasing what was heard, and acknowledging emotions. When youth feel heard, they are more likely to trust and cooperate. Teaching empathetic listening also helps youth improve communication with peers and adults. It encourages patience and reduces misunderstandings. By practicing this skill in group discussions and one-on-one conversations, youth learn to respect different viewpoints. Listening with empathy does not mean agreeing with everything that is said, but it does mean showing care and openness. Over time, this approach builds stronger connections and a more supportive community.
