One-on-One Conversations That Change Behavior

One-on-one conversations provide opportunities to address behavior in a private, respectful, and supportive way. These discussions allow adults to listen to the youth’s perspective and explore what led to a particular choice. Effective conversations focus on understanding rather than blaming and on solutions rather than lectures. Adults ask questions that help youth reflect on what happened, who was affected, and what could be done differently next time. This approach builds trust and reduces defensiveness. One-on-one conversations also reinforce the idea that behavior is a choice and that individuals can make better choices in the future. By separating the behavior from the person, adults communicate belief in the youth’s ability to grow. These conversations strengthen relationships while teaching responsibility. Over time, consistent use of thoughtful dialogue supports lasting behavior change.
