Transitions—moving from one activity to another—can sometimes be challenging for young people. Without preparation, youth may feel rushed, confused, or resistant when asked to stop what they are doing.
Adults can make transitions smoother by preparing youth ahead of time. Giving a brief warning such as, “In five minutes we will be cleaning up and moving to the next activity,” allows youth to finish what they are doing and mentally prepare for the change.
Visual signals, countdowns, or short cleanup routines can also help youth transition smoothly. When transitions become predictable, youth learn what to expect and adjust more easily.
Smooth transitions help maintain program flow and reduce behavior challenges. They also reinforce responsibility as youth learn to manage their time and materials.
Child Champions recognize that thoughtful transitions keep programs organized, respectful, and focused on positive learning experiences.
