Setting Clear Agreements

Clear agreements establish shared expectations for behavior and participation within a group. Unlike rules imposed from above, agreements are most effective when youth help create them and understand their purpose. Agreements describe what respectful, safe, and responsible behavior looks like in everyday actions. They provide a common language for addressing challenges and reinforcing positive choices. When agreements are stated clearly and reviewed regularly, youth know what is expected and feel a sense of ownership over group norms. This reduces confusion and inconsistency. Clear agreements also support fairness because everyone is held to the same standards. When adults refer back to agreements during conflicts, they guide behavior without personalizing correction. Over time, agreements help build community and accountability. They teach youth that expectations exist to support learning and relationships, not simply to control behavior.
