Smooth Starts and Strong Closings

The beginning and ending of an activity set the tone for everything in between. Smooth starts help youth understand expectations, feel organized, and become mentally ready to participate. This can include gathering the group, explaining the purpose of the activity, and previewing what will happen next. Strong closings reinforce learning by giving youth time to reflect, share, and connect the experience to real life. When activities end abruptly without closure, important lessons are often lost. Purposeful openings and closings create a sense of completion and meaning. They also help youth transition emotionally and mentally from one part of the program to another. Over time, consistent starts and endings build routine and trust. Youth learn that their time and effort matter, and that learning is something worth noticing and remembering.
