Emotional regulation is the ability to manage feelings in healthy and constructive ways. Young people experience strong emotions as they grow, and learning how to respond to those feelings is an essential life skill.

Adults can support emotional regulation by helping youth identify and name their emotions. When youth understand what they are feeling, they are better able to choose appropriate responses.

Teaching simple strategies—such as taking deep breaths, pausing before reacting, or talking through a problem—helps youth manage frustration or disappointment.

Adults also play an important role by modeling calm behavior during challenging situations. Youth observe how adults handle stress and often adopt similar approaches.

Child Champions recognize that emotional regulation supports positive relationships, better decision-making, and improved learning. Helping youth manage their emotions prepares them for success in school and life.
