Self-advocacy is an important life skill that helps young people express their needs, ask questions, and seek support when necessary. When youth learn to advocate for themselves, they develop confidence and independence.
Adults can encourage this skill by inviting youth to share their ideas and concerns respectfully. Asking questions such as “How could you explain what you need?” helps youth practice expressing themselves clearly.
Providing opportunities for youth to make choices and participate in discussions strengthens their ability to communicate effectively.
Self-advocacy also teaches youth to take responsibility for their learning and well-being. When young people understand how to speak up respectfully, they become more active participants in their own development.
Child Champions recognize that helping youth find their voice prepares them for future success in school, relationships, and the workplace.
