June 6 – Building Trust With Youth
Trust is key in relationships.
Trust is one of the most important elements in positive youth development. When young people trust the adults around them, they feel comfortable sharing ideas, asking for help, and participating fully in activities.
Trust develops over time through consistent and respectful interactions. When adults keep their promises, treat youth fairly, and listen carefully to their concerns, young people begin to feel safe and supported.
Small actions can make a big difference. Greeting youth by name, remembering details about their interests, and responding calmly to challenges all help strengthen trust.
It is also important for adults to be reliable. When youth know that staff members will follow through on what they say, it reinforces the sense that the program environment is stable and dependable.
As trust grows, relationships become stronger. Youth who trust the adults around them are more willing to try new things, express their thoughts, and build confidence in their abilities.
