June 11 – Encouraging Youth to Ask Why
Asking “Why?”.
Curiosity often begins with a simple question: Why? When young people ask why things happen, they are beginning the process of critical thinking and discovery.
Youth programs can nurture this curiosity by creating environments where questions are welcomed and encouraged. Instead of viewing questions as interruptions, adults can see them as opportunities for learning.
When youth ask “why,” adults can guide exploration by asking additional questions such as, “What do you think might be the reason?” or “How could we find out more about that?” These conversations encourage youth to investigate ideas and develop their own understanding.
Encouraging questions also builds confidence. When young people know their curiosity is valued, they feel comfortable sharing ideas and exploring new topics.
By supporting youth curiosity, programs help young people develop habits of inquiry that lead to deeper learning and lifelong exploration.
