June 12 – Helping Youth Develop Strong Listening Skills
Active Listening–More Than Hearing.
Listening is an essential skill for building relationships and understanding others. When youth learn to listen carefully, they become better communicators and collaborators.
Youth programs can help develop listening skills through discussions, team activities, and group problem-solving experiences. Encouraging youth to take turns speaking and listening helps create respectful conversations.
Adults play an important role by modeling strong listening behaviors. Making eye contact, acknowledging ideas, and responding thoughtfully demonstrate what effective listening looks like.
Programs can also encourage youth to summarize what they heard or ask questions for clarification. These practices strengthen comprehension and mutual understanding.
When youth learn to listen with attention and respect, they develop stronger friendships and become more effective participants in group activities. Listening helps young people appreciate different perspectives and build meaningful connections with others.
