June 5 – Encouraging Youth to Ask Questions
Be curious.
Questions are the starting point of learning. When youth ask questions, they demonstrate curiosity and a desire to understand the world around them.
Programs that encourage questioning create environments where exploration and discovery are valued. Instead of focusing only on answers, adults can celebrate the process of asking thoughtful questions.
Adults can model curiosity by asking open-ended questions themselves. Phrases such as “What do you think?” or “Why do you think that happened?” encourage youth to reflect and analyze ideas.
Encouraging questions also helps youth develop critical thinking skills. When young people explore possible explanations and test their ideas, they deepen their understanding.
When youth feel comfortable asking questions, learning becomes more engaging and meaningful. Curiosity grows, and young people begin to see themselves as active participants in the process of discovery.
