Asking For Help

One of the ways we can all put our best foot forward is by asking for help when we need it.  There are many jokes about people who are driving and are incredibly lost, but refuse to stop and ask for help.  I am reminded of the Vacation movie when Chevy Chase is “stuck” driving around and around the circle and not being able to get off and head in any direction at all.  He got stuck in a rut so to speak, and just couldn’t get out of his own way.  Asking for help when you need it is a skill we need to help youth develop.  (As a side note, remember youth emulate what they see you and I do, so we need to ask ourselves if we ask for help when we need it.)  It could save hours, days, and weeks of frustration.

In an article published in Education Week in August, researchers look at the ways and times youth ask for help.  It provides insight for the reader as to what is really going on here.  It also speaks to the importance of setting a tone for asking for help.  To read the entire article go to

So when you consider putting your best foot forward, and you are unclear exactly what that might look like, asking for the help and support of a trusted role model and mentor can be just the right thing to do.  Remember, there are no stupid questions.  If you don’t know, you don’t know.  Admitting you need help in deciding how to set yourself up for success is the first step toward that success.
